Cork Chamber Orchestra Bursary

Rebecca Cap, pianist, aged 24, from Monkstown, past pupil of Cork School of Music and now studying full-time in Prague, was the worthy winner of the CCO Bursary valued at e2,500. It was presented to her by the President of the Cork Lions´Club, Mr Paschal Horgan, at a civic reception in the Lord Mayor´s Chambers, City Hall on June 8th. I was MC for the event.

My New Friend

Met the Lord Mayor of Cork, Cllr Deirdre Clune, in her Chambers the other day. We had a nice chat ....

Grotto in a Cave

This grotto on the north side of Valentia Island is built into the opening of a large cave which is being used as the workplace for the slate quarry. There is an altar on the ground and Mass is celebrated there occasionally. A watefall tumbles down from under the statue of the Virgin.

Sleeping Croc

This is the headland opposite Caherciveen. Looks lke a sleeping crocodile!

Stairway to .........

Inside the Castle

Ballycarberry Castle

Ballycarberry Castle, near Caherciveen, built in the mid 1600's, still holds a lot of its original features - internal stairs and passageways and carved stone window frames. Its well worth the long cycle out to it!

India in Kerry!

Believe it or not this is the 'Old Police Station' (RIC station) in Caherciveen. Apparently it was planned for the border in India but plans got mixed up and it ended up being built in Kerry! It comes quite as a shock when you turn the corner off main street Caherciveen!

Telegraph Field Stone

Can you read the inscription on the stone? On the left of the stone there are sections of the actual cables used.

Transatlantic Radio Cable Point

This is the point where the first transatlantic radio cable came onshore, allowing immediate communication between USA and Europe. The first message was 'Glory to God in the Highest, On Earth, Peace and Goodwill to All Men', followed by Queen Victoria's message to President Buchanan.

Portmagee Bridge

Portmagee bridge connects the island to the mainland - the Iveragh Peninsula.

Pat and George on Valentia Island

We took the camper van to Mannix Point camping site in Caherciveen for the June bank holiday weekend. On the Sunday we cycled to Reen's Point and took the ferry to Valentia Island. We spent the day cycling around the island. It is a 19 mile circuit.

On the quay, waiting for the ferry to arrive.
